Madhumita Roy (Mitu) is the granddaughter of Dr Radha Binod Pal (maternal grandfather), an Indian jurist who was the Indian member appointed to the International Military Tribunal for the Far East's trials of Japanese war crimes committed during the Second World War. Among all the judges of the tribunal, he was the only one who submitted a judgment which insisted all defendants were not
guilty. He worked as professor at the Law College of the University of Calcutta from 1923 till 1936.
He became a judge of Calcutta High Court in 1941 and Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta in
1944.
She is the granddaughter of late Aswini Kumar Pal (paternal grandfather), who always appreciated
her childhood talents and strived her to work hard. He was an electrical engineer by profession.
She is the beloved niece of Dr Debi Prasad Pal, a Senior Advocate practicing in the Supreme Court of
India and High Courts of India. He is a former Union Minister of State for Finance, a former Judge of
Calcutta High Court and a Member of Parliament (MP) for three consecutive terms i.e. 9th
11th
Lok Sabha. He was also a member of the 10th
by obtaining the Degree of Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) degree in 1961 for in International law and the
Degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt) in political economy from the University of Calcutta. He had
been a Professor in the Post Graduate Department of Commerce of CU and also a Professor of Law
of the University Law College, Calcutta. He had been also the senior Vice-President of Asiatic Society.
He is an author of the treaties on “State Sovereignty at the Cross Roads” and “Sales Tax Laws”. He
had contributed several articles on contemporary economic problems.
Finance Commission. He had acquired distinction
Her father, Mr Rama Prasad Pal was an I.A. & A.S. and retired as an Accountant General, who was
the driving force behind her success in life. He had been a fountain of inspiration to her work. His
words “dream in English, think in English and speak in English” helped her a lot in later days. He
also taught her never ever to waste even a trifle thing; these sermons added up and enhanced her
success in life. Her father gave her yet another important lesson in life – always respect grey hairs
(aged people), a promise which she always keeps. It needs no special mention that she has acquired
her honesty, punctuality, dedication and strong determination from her loving father.
Her mother (Mrs Smritikana Pal) and aunt (Late Lakshmi Rani Pal) took pain in bringing her up and
she is ever grateful to them for the help they rendered. She considers herself lucky to have been
brought up under the loving care of her two mothers, as to her, her aunt was no less than her
mother. Their encouragement and active support in all the ventures she had undertaken needs
special mention. Without their active help, it would have been impossible for her to be, what she is
today. She was fortunate to be brought up in the care of ma (mother) and mummy (aunt). As she is
a working mother, her Ma and Mummy were instrumental in raising her two kids selflessly, feeling
their lives with laugh and laughter.
Mr Avijit Pal, an electronics engineer from JU and MBA from IIM, presently Senior Project Manager
at IBM, and her sister in law, Susmita Pal, an electrical engineer, Delivery and Pre-Sales Head, Tata
Consultancy Services and their little one Asmita always extended their co-operation.
Last but not the least thanks are also due to her two tiny tots Kaustuv and Kausheyo, who always
appreciated their mother’s venture with deep understanding and love. It would have been injustice
to them, her sweet children, for their sparing her much needed attention to them, but for which her
progress of the work would have been impeded much. Their innate innocence and naive nature are
praise worthy for accelerating her career. Now they are no longer tiny tots: Kaustuv (6’3” tall), now
an electronics engineer has joined TCS and Kausheyo (6’3” tall) is appearing for ICS in 2014. Both
of them are very musical, particularly Kausheyo, who has won the honour of securing the highest
marks in grade V (violin) in West Bengal conducted by the Associated Board of the Royal schools of
Music, UK. Even though being a working mother, she always found time to fill her children’s life with
her warmth and mirth.
Not to boast about her family, all her cousins are pretty well established in their respective fields.
Needless to say, that she has been inspired by her cousins and she is proud of them. Finally, she is
indebted to all her kith and kin for their love, affection and encouragement.
